How to prepare for a metabolic test?
To get a proper reading, we advise that you not do hard exercise the day before. You should also eat and drink normally - don’t alter your diet or water intake 24 hours beforehand.
A metabolism test also needs to be done without food or drink for at least 4 hours before the test. You can have water, but it’s best not to have caffeine until 8 hours before you come in.
Dress comfortably - You will be sitting for about 20mins so comfortable clothing is preferred. If you are doing the exercise portion fo the testing then you will need to wear something you are comfortable exercising in.
What happens during a metabolic test?
A metabolic test uses indirect calorimetry, a non-invasive procedure that measures your metabolism. You will be connected to our metabolic cart, which measures the amount of oxygen that you breathe in and the amount of carbon dioxide that you breathe out.
Oxygen consumption can tell us the number of calories burned. And since we also measure carbon dioxide production, we can estimate the relative amounts of fat and carbohydrate being metabolised.
Your testing results
On the day of your testing, we will be able to provide you with the results of your metabolism, showing how many calories you should eat per day. We can also provide you with a plan within 48hrs, to show how many calories and what types of foods you should be eating per day to achieve the results you want.
