VO2 Max Testing
What is VO2Max
Your VO2Max is one of the best markers for fitness and performance. Although not the only metric that matters (The Five Fundamentals Of Endurance Performance), your VO2Max represents the ceiling of how much oxygen you can breathe in and convert to energy. The more energy you can convert, the more power and speed you can produce.
As well as being a measure for fitness, VO2Max testing provides you with much more than just this.
Training Zones
Based on your VO2Max test, we can accurately pinpoint your training zones (not the max heart rate nonsense), which enables you to target your training to achieve a specific outcome. This means you know what heart rate, power or speed you should be aiming for within each session.
Identify your strengths and weaknesses
From a VO2Max test, we can compare your results to optimal values, which helps us decide your fitness area that needs more work. Is it endurance, high intensity exercise, or do you need to be more efficient? A VO2Max test can tell you this.
Carb Vs. Fat Burn
From a VO2Max test, we can also see how much fat and carbohydrates you burn at different intensities (speed or power). Your carbohydrate/fat burn helps us understand how to eat for various training sessions and maximise fat loss.
How many kcals do you burn at different intensities? Using indirect calorimetry, we can measure how many kcals you burn, which makes things easier to plan how much you need to eat for your goals.

Who will benefit from a VO2Max test?
-
Athletes - A VO2Max test can help sportstmen and women maximise their training to target them as individuals and for their specific sport. It can also help reduce the chances of injury by monitoring how hard you push.
-
If you want to get fitter - If you’re looking to get fitter, a VO2Max test can target your training around your physiology and makeup. Knowing your VO2Max helps make your workouts more effective and efficient, so you get results more quickly.
-
If you want to understand how to fuel your training - A VO2Max test is one of the most powerful tools to understand how to eat for your training. By seeing how many carbohydrates you are burning, we can help fuel you properly and maximise fat loss
-
If you want to lose weight - A VO2Max test is not just for athletes. If your goal is weight loss, we can help you understand what intensities you burn the most amount of fat and how to burn the most amount of kcals.
How Does A VO2Max Test Work?
The VO2Max test is a simple exercise test performed on a treadmill or bike, where the speed or resistance increases every minute until you can’t exercise any longer.
The test lasts typically between 10-15mins depending on your fitness level.
Results will differ so choose the type of exercise that best suits your training. If you’re not an accomplished cyclist, then we recommend you choose the treadmill.
During the test, you will be wearing a mask connected to the metabolic cart. The metabolic cart will analyse the oxygen you breathe in and the carbon dioxide you are breathing out. You will also be wearing a heart rate monitor and power meter to gather as much information as possible about your fitness.
After Your Test
Using some powerful software, we can then take all of this data and provide you with a full training report.
This includes:
-
Your VO2Max score
-
Your training zones including kcal burn
-
Your carbohydrate and fat burn
-
Your Anaerobic and Aerobic thresholds
-
A full debrief session going over your results and how you need to improve
And most importantly a clear path to better results!
