Like many of you, I've explored various aspects of fitness – from lifting weights to hitting the pavement. While I may not be breaking world records, my diverse experience over 15 years in coaching has given me a broad perspective on what it takes to excel in different fitness arenas.
As an official HYROX coach and gym affiliate, I'm deeply embedded in the world of hybrid training. My credentials include a master's degree in sports and exercise nutrition, certification as a Human Performance Hybrid Master Course Coach, and VDOT certified running trainer status. Plus, I've performed hundreds of VO2Max and lactate tests, giving me a thorough understanding of running physiology and what it takes to optimise performance.

Understanding Hyrox
HYROX is a fitness competition that originated in Germany and has gained popularity worldwide. It's designed to test participants' strength, endurance, and mental toughness. HYROX events are open to athletes of all levels, from beginners to elite competitors.
The format of a HYROX event is consistent across the globe: it includes a total of 8 workouts separated by 1-kilometer running intervals, for a total of 8 kilometers of running. The workouts involve functional exercises like wall balls, burpees, sled pushes and pulls, and other movements typically seen in functional fitness or high-intensity interval training (HIIT) settings.
A unique aspect of HYROX is that it's not a race against other competitors but a race against the clock, with the goal being to complete the entire course as quickly as possible. This allows participants to measure their personal progress over time and to compete against themselves, not just others.
Another distinct feature is that each event, regardless of the location, has the same workout sequence, meaning athletes worldwide are effectively competing in the same race, making it a standardised global fitness competition.
This unique blend of disciplines makes HYROX not just challenging, but also demanding in terms of preparation. To excel in HYROX, you can't simply follow a traditional strength training or endurance running programme - you need a programme that balances both, and adds in elements of functional fitness.
