VO2Max testing can predictably improve your cycling. Looking under the “bonnet” at your physiology gives us powerful insights into your current fitness levels, helps identify your strengths and weaknesses, predict cycling performance and provide accurate training and nutrition recommendations.

What is your VO2Max

Your VO2Max represents the size of your endurance engine and measures how much oxygen you can convert to energy. A big VO2Max is a prerequisite for any good cyclist.

However, VO2Max testing is more than just your VO2Max score.

Identify Your Strengths and Weaknesses

A VO2Max test helps build your metabolic profile. This ‘fitness fingerprint’ gives you a good indication of where you are now and which areas you need to improve by comparing you to ideal values. Do you need to work more on your endurance, do you need to work on your power at higher or lower intensities, are you a poor fat burner, we can find out with a bike VO2Max test.

Accurate training zones

A VO2Max test helps us establish your power and heart rate training zones based on multiple markers. VO2Max testing helps us provide you with far more accurate training zones than using just FTP or maximum heart rate. From this, we can determine what intensity you need to cycle at to bring about a specific outcome.

More than FTP

Our testing looks at multiple markers to develop your training zones. FTP tests don’t account for your actual VO2Max or sprint abilities so your training zones can be inaccurate with this method.

Provide you with an accurate fuelling plan

VO2Max testing helps see how many kcals as well as carbohydrates you burn at various intensities. By knowing how many kcals and carbs you burn during your Zwift session or outdoor rides, you will be able to put together a proper fuelling plan for your training and races. You will also know how to pace your longer races, so you don’t get caught bonking!

Monitor your progress

As well as establishing your baseline fitness, subsequent testing can see if your training is working. VO2Max testing helps you tweak or change your training to make sure you’re consistently improving.

How Does A VO2Max Test Work?

 VO2Max cycling test is a simple exercise test performed on the bike. By connecting your bike to a smart trainer, we can measure your power, oxygen intake, kcal burn and heart rate at different intensities.

Starting at low resistance (power), you will be required to pedal at a constant workload for 1 minute. After each minute, the resistance is increased by 20-30w and will continue until you can no longer maintain the required workload.

After Your Test - VO2 Max Training

Using some powerful software, we can then take all of this data and provide you with a full training report.

This includes:


  1. Your VO2Max score

  2. Your cycling heart rate and power training zones including kcal burn

  3. Your carbohydrate and fat burn

  4. Your Anaerobic and Aerobic thresholds

  5. A full debrief session going over your results and how you need to improve


And most importantly a clear path to better results!
