VO2 max testing for runners

A breath-by-breath treadmill ramp test that measures your aerobic ceiling, finds your ventilatory thresholds and turns them into pace and heart-rate zones you can actually train with.

Protocol — Treadmill rampDuration — ~60 min visitPrice — £125Includes — Report + debrief

Testing led by Jack Braniff — MSc Sport & Exercise Nutrition, SENr & CISSN registered, UKAD anti-doping advisor and author of Fuelling The Functional Athlete.

Why test

Your race times live between two thresholds

VO2 max is the ceiling of how much oxygen your body can take in and turn into running speed. But the number itself is only the start — the real value for a runner is what we find on the way up: your first and second ventilatory thresholds (VT1 and VT2), the points where easy running stops being easy and where sustainable pace tips into unsustainable.

Those two lines define your training zones. Train below, between and above them deliberately and you improve fast. Guess at them from a watch formula and you spend most of your weeks in the grey zone — too hard to build base, too easy to raise your ceiling.

We also measure how much fat and carbohydrate you burn at every speed, so you know exactly how to fuel long runs, marathon builds and race day.

Your personal zones (pace & heart rate)What it trains
Zone 1 — RecoveryEasy aerobic work, active recovery
Zone 2 — EnduranceFat-burning base, the engine room
Zone 3 — TempoSustained 'comfortably hard' efforts
Zone 4 — ThresholdRace pace around LT2 / FTP
Zone 5 — VO2 MaxShort, maximal intervals

How it works

Your hour in the lab

Consultation

A quick 15-minute chat about your running history, weekly mileage, goals and any upcoming races, so the protocol and debrief are built around you.

Setup

You're fitted with a heart-rate monitor and a breath-analysis mask connected to our metabolic cart, which measures every breath of oxygen in and carbon dioxide out.

Ramp test

You run on the treadmill while the speed increases every minute. It starts conversational and builds until you reach your maximum — typically 10–15 minutes of running.

Analysis

We process the breath-by-breath data to find your VO2 max, VT1 and VT2, your economy, and your fat and carbohydrate burn rates at each pace.

Debrief & report

You sit down with Jack and walk through your numbers, your personal zones and what your next training block should look like. The full report is yours to keep.

Who it's for

Built for runners at every level

Marathon & half

Race-pace precision

Pin your marathon and half-marathon pace to physiology rather than hope, and learn your carb burn so you can build a fuelling plan that avoids the wall.

5k–10k & club

Sharper sessions

Know exactly what pace your intervals, tempo runs and easy days should be — and retest to see the thresholds move.

New to structure

A clear starting line

If you've just started training seriously, one test gives you correct zones from day one instead of a year of trial and error.

FAQ

Common questions

How fit do I need to be for a VO2 max test?

You don't need to be an elite runner. The treadmill protocol is scaled to your current fitness — it starts easy and ramps up gradually, so beginners through to competitive club runners all get valid results.

How long does the actual running last?

The maximal part of the test usually lasts 10–15 minutes depending on your fitness. Your full visit is around an hour including consultation, setup and warm-up.

What should I do before the test?

Arrive rested (no hard sessions in the previous 24 hours), avoid a heavy meal in the 2–3 hours beforehand, and bring your normal running shoes and kit.

What do I get after the test?

A full report covering your VO2 max, ventilatory thresholds, personal heart-rate and pace training zones, and your fat vs carbohydrate burn at different speeds — plus a debrief explaining exactly how to use it.

Treadmill or bike — which should I choose?

Choose the mode you train in. Runners should test on the treadmill: VO2 max is sport-specific, and treadmill results map directly onto your running paces.
